Tribute

Gary “Zeke” Reed’s life began on July 17, 1947 in El Dorado, KS; the son of Jesse G. and MaryAnna F. (Andrews) Reed. Zeke attended and graduated from Junior College. He worked hard for his family retiring from the Water Department as a Supervisor for the City of El Dorado. He also was a “professional shit-stirrer”, owning and operating Prairie Pots Portable Toilets in El Dorado for many years. Zeke was united in marriage to the light of his life, Shirley Anne Hill on October 4, 1969 in El Dorado. Zeke enjoyed walking his dogs, hunting treasures geocaching and spending time with family. Zeke was a mentor, adoptive father and positive role model for many youths, providing guidance and support. Zeke enjoyed going to the International Port-a-Pot Conventions and going on other trips with David, Jim and their wives. Zeke was a professional story-teller and would spend hours telling tall tales. He loved to work puzzles and especially enjoyed solving the word puzzles watching Wheel of Fortune. In retirement, Zeke enjoyed going on vacation cruises, traveling the world with his wife, Shirley. Zeke gave 110% of himself and enjoyed volunteering. He was a cub scout leader, a member of the Jaycee’s for 10 years and a founding member of Prairie Port and helped it grow for 25 years. Zeke was also involved in the Governor’s One Shot Turkey Hunt and served as Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department for many years. His greatest joy was his family, which includes his wife, Shirley of El Dorado; children Garey Michael (Kelli) Reed of Derby, Drew Alan (Genie) Reed of Dodge City, Kitra (Chris) Scott of Monument, CO; grandchildren, Kayla, Justin, Ashley, Ryan, Corey, Erin, Sierra, Savannah, Smantha, Shawn, Madison, Hunter; great-grandchildren Dominic, Nevaeh, Corey, Jacob, Jazmyn, Xavier, Hazel, Liberty, Janelle, Lucian; siblings Beverly Ann Reed, Robert Oliver Reed, Richard Lee Reed, Mary Kay Ross. Zeke passed away on April 17, 2024 in Wichita. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother James Edwin Reed, sisters Carol Jo Shearburn and Kerri Mae Reed; great-grandson Preston. Memorial services will take place on Wednesday, April 24 at 10:30am at the First Christian Church of El Dorado. Memorial contributions in Zeke’s name may be directed to the Potwin Fire Rescue.
